PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 Upgrades

On Nov. 17, the PS5 version of Mortal Kombat 11 will be made available in conjunction with the Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate release. Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate owners and new buyers on PS4 can access a free upgrade to the PS5 version of their game, available in conjunction with the Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate release.

What versions of Mortal Kombat 11 are upgrade compatible?

Owners of the following physical AND digital copies of Mortal Kombat 11 on PS4 are digital upgrade compatible with PS5. 

  • Mortal Kombat 11 Main Game
  • Mortal Kombat 11 Premium Edition
  • Mortal Kombat 11 Kollector’s Edition
  • Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath Kollection
  • Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate

Players with a physical PS4 Mortal Kombat 11 disc will need to ensure that their PS5 console has a disc drive to be eligible for the upgrade. The physical disc region will also need to match the region of the player’s PSN ID.

If you purchased individual DLC, such as the playable character Shao Kahn for example, this content would also carry over to the PS5 version.

What benefits are included in the upgraded version on PS5?

The next-generation version of Mortal Kombat 11 on PS5 includes:

  • 4K Dynamic Resolution
  • Enhanced Visuals
  • Improved Loading Times
  • Cross-Platform/Cross-Gen Compatibility for select modes*
  • PS4 owners and new buyers can access a free upgrade to the PS5 version of their game, available in conjunction with the Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate launch.

What happens with my current progression when I move to PS5? Will my unlocked rewards from the PS4 version carry over?

As long as you are signed in with the same PlayStation ID, all inventory, earned rewards and custom character variations will carry over. Any Time Krystals that were purchased or acquired will also carry over, as well as anything that was purchased with them.

Previous Towers of Time and Krypt progression will be available on PS5. Story progress in Part 1 (main game) & Part 2 (Aftermath story expansion) will not, but any rewards earned from completing these campaigns will. Those rewards include the Frost playable character unlock from completing Chapter 4 "Fire & Ice" in Story Mode Part 1 and any skins or gear items.

Settings files and stats displayed in your Kombat Kard will not carry over to PS5 in the upgraded version or when playing the PS4 version on a PS5 console.

I am playing Mortal Kombat 11 for the first time, can I purchase it for the PS5?

Yes, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate provides the definitive Mortal Kombat 11 experience for new players joining the fight, featuring the 37-character roster, two story critically acclaimed campaigns and all game modes in a single package for $59.99 (SRP).

What if I install the PS4 version of Mortal Kombat 11 on PS5 before the upgraded version is made available on Nov. 17 2020?

Players will have an experience similar to that of playing on the PS4 hardware via backward compatibility.

What does this mean for trophy progress?

Playing the backward compatible PS4 version on PS5 will share the same trophy list and progress.

Playing the PS5 upgraded version provides a fresh set of the same trophies. There are no plans to add new trophies to this release.

Accessory Compatibility

What accessories are compatible with the PS4 version of Mortal Kombat 11 when played on PS5?

  • DualShock 4
  • PS5 DualSense
  • Some PS4 Fight Sticks and Fight Pads
  • Some PS3 Fight Sticks that were compatible with PS4

How do I access the PS5 upgraded version on release?

The steps to redeeming your free upgrade will vary depending on which version of Mortal Kombat 11 you currently own on PS4.

Physical

To upgrade your existing MK11 PS4 game on disc to the digital PS5 version, you will need a PS5 console with a disc drive. PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

  1. Sign in to your existing account on your PS5 console.
  2. Insert the eligible PS4 game disc.
  3. Highlight Mortal Kombat 11 in the Game Hub screen.
  4. Select the upgrade offer on the right side of the screen (indicated by a white box that states "Free PS5 Upgrade") and accept the upgrade offer.
  5. Select Download to add the game to your download queue
  6. After the download is complete, you can play the PS5 digital game by inserting the PS4 game disc. You will need to keep the disc inserted each time to play the game.

Please Note: Players who own the physical release of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath Kollection OR Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate will need to redeem the paper code voucher inside of the game box to access the upgraded version and previously included DLC content for PS5. You may also need to launch the PS5 version of Mortal Kombat 11 and launch the in-game shop to download a free listing of the "Aftermath Kollection". This will grant access to Kombat Pack 1 content.

Digital

To upgrade an eligible digital PS4 game you already own to the digital PS5 version:

  1. Sign in to your existing account on your PS5 console.
  2. Find the Mortal Kombat 11 in PlayStation Store, or through the Search function, and go to the Game Hub for the game.
  3. Select the upgrade offer on the right side of the screen (indicated by the white box that states "Free PS5 Upgrade") and accept the upgrade offer.
  4. Select Download to add the game to your download queue
  5. After the download is complete, you can play the PS5 game.
