Developer Notes
Check out developer notes on two mobile exclusive characters in Mortal Kombat Mobile.
Day of the Dead Kitana – Release 2016
In the Mortal Kombat Universe, characters fight to the death every day. There are no pauses to remember the characters who have been defeated, no emotional connection. It's just “play a new round”, and "Who's Next?". But in real life, the annual Day of the Dead events that take place in Mexico and other countries honor the people who have passed away. The religious ceremonies, as well as the festive parades and celebrations feature visually stunning costumes, abundant in tradition and lore.
The MK Mobile development team wanted to create a Mobile Exclusive character based on these rich traditions. At first, we only developed Kitana. We altered her MKX Story costume to fit our vision of a DOTD styled Kitana. She had to be modest and respectful of traditions, but also fit the look of a dangerous MK character.
The costume turned predominantly black with blue accents. She wears black leather boots with polished silver knee pads, and similarly styled shoulder pads. Kitana's black full arm gloves have muted blue graphics. Black lace extends the gloves up to the shoulders. The same lace is added around the neck. A full coverage, satin puffed short covers up the exposed hips, and that is a great place to add a large sugar skull print. She completes the costume with a matching black corset and blue piping.
Her hair is styled with braided loops and bangs on the front. A polished silver accent and 2 blue roses complete her headdress. Her fan weapons are also decorated with rose prints. The most iconic element is her breathtaking facial makeup! This was a major departure from everything we had done so far, but we felt convinced we would give the fans something they would love to play. Based on the overwhelming player response, we added completely original versions of Jade and Erron Black to form the Day of the Dead synergy team.
DOTD Jade's costume draws your attention straight to her gold skull mask with decorative carvings in the DOTD tradition. She wears a radial sun ray gold crown atop her large veil. Like Kitana, Jade's leather and lace gloves extend to the shoulders. The same combination occurs with her boots. What little remains of Jade's exposed skin is covered in black and white calavera (skull) paint. Jade traditionally carries a pink or green energy staff. We made a wrought iron staff with corkscrew details, intended to look like something you would see around a cemetery fence. The staff has a cast iron skull on each end with enchanted crystals that emit a pink essence. This essential detail was a combination of the tradition of burning incense for the dead, and a nod recognizing the eye popping real life DOTD parades that feature tons of colorful smoke trails.
DOTD Erron Black is all in black, except for his bright red ascot knot that features a sugar skull print. His large hat is shaped closer to a sombrero than his traditional cowboy hat. It has plenty of decorative stitching ornamentation to reinforce the DOTD lore. The top half of his face is covered with traditional calavera paint. He wears a black bandana to cover the rest of his face and neck. The high angular cut of his suit not only shows off the sugar skull print on his vest, but also allows him easy access to his pistols. The pistols are custom designs as well, showing off intricate DOTD carvings, with sugar skull ivory inlays on the handles.
We hope you enjoy playing the MK Mobile Day of the Dead team and appreciate all the fan art and cosplay! Look for more DOTD characters in the console version of MK11.
Kombat Cup Johnny Cage - 2018
The Mortal Kombat fanbase loved the Soccer Johnny Cage skin from the Brazil Pack DLC of the Mortal Kombat X Console game. A few years later, the MK Mobile Developers wanted to support the "big Futbol tournament" in 2018 with a new costume designed exclusively for Mobile. Instead of representing just Brazil, the new Kombat Cup Johnny wears a home kit inspired by the NetherRealm Studios logo, featuring a huge black silhouette of Scorpion against a Netherrealm portal. We still love you Brazil, but we replaced the Brazil flag with the City of Chicago flag (that's where we develop Mortal Kombat games). Johnny still wears his iconic shades, even when playing Futbol.
Johnny's "all about me" attitude is a perfect fit for representing some of the exaggerated antics seen at the highest levels of the sport. We translated this to details in his apparel. Johnny appointed himself as the only Captain of the team.
There will be no Captain armbands for anyone else because he has the Captain's Letter permanently sewn into his jersey. His Jersey number is 1, and he has declared himself the GOAT by replacing his last name with the Greatest Of All Time acronym.
His physical characteristics don't disappoint either. Johnny shamelessly plays the part with a Man-Bun hairstyle. His arms are covered with Dragon tattoos inspired by the original MK Arcade cabinet art. A special tattoo detail that most players may not notice: the dragon claws hold a Futbol within his palms.
Johnny's full-time job as a "Famous" Hollywood actor means the rules don't apply to him. He immediately breaks the #1 rule of the sport: don't touch the ball with your hands! In his Special Moves, Johnny holds a flaming Futbol and throws it at an opponent - this is supported with a swipe skill game mechanic. Then he rebounds the ball back at the opponent with a flying backflip kick - this time supported with a tap skill game mechanic. Johnny shows off the Kombat Cup Trophy in his Feats of Strength victory animation.
Johnny was so popular with MK Mobile players that we added Sonya and Cassie to complete a synergy team of 3 Kombat Cup characters.

Kombat Cup Cassie Cage joined the squad in 2021 to complete the Kombat Cup team. Check out her gameplay highlight: https://www.facebook.com/MKMobileGame/videos/1030898177483668
